Taking stock of the Transat Jacques Vabre 2021!

As the Transat Jacques Vabre boats cross the finish line, the Lyophilise & Co team takes stock. In terms of provisioning, three quarters of the fleet passed through the door of the Lorient shop or had their precious food delivered directly to Le Havre, in Normandy, for this unmissable race.

Diversity, the key to successful provisioning for the TJV 2021

At Freezedried & Co, skippers are above all looking for diversity, quality products and a service that listens to their needs for tailor-made provisioning.
Because cooking can obviously be difficult at sea (conservation of fresh products, preparation time, equipment, etc.), the sailors supplied themselves partly with freeze-dried and dehydrated food (meals in which the water has been evaporated, either by cold for the former, or hot for the latter). These processes make it possible to lengthen the shelf life of food and reduce weight. In the middle of the Atlantic and in harsh conditions, these rehydrating dishes are nutritious and quick to prepare with hot water. With a choice that is unique in Europe, more than 350 listings of complete meals are offered in the Autumn/Winter 2021 catalogue of the Lorient-based company.

‘Ready-to-eat’ meals are also taken on board. Sterilised or canned, the latter represent a constantly growing part of Lyophilise & Co. They delight sailors during offshore races, looking for different textures and flavours. While large companies, such as Charal in France, are making their mark on the outdoor food market,the know-how of local artisans has been emerging for many years, such as Bocaux & Petits Plats in Finistère, Le Bon Bag in Angers, Cuisine Plaisir in the Gers and Nomad’s Kitchen, which has recently set up shop in Morbihan and won over many crews for the Transat Jacques Vabre race with its comforting and energetic cuisine.


To complete this chapter on food on board, a significant portion has to be dedicated to the energy bars and dried meats consumed during the night to stay alert and to facilitate recovery.
