Description

The explorer's coconut rice is a complete freeze-dried meal designed for eating in the great outdoors. Suited to hiking, bivouacking or bikepacking, it stands out thanks to its self-heating system. This allows you to enjoy a hot meal with no stove, no gas and no flame — a practical advantage for keeping kit light on multi-day adventures.

The recipe combines rice with a smooth coconut milk sauce. Its creamy texture and mild, slightly sweet flavour offer an alternative to more classic freeze dried meals. At 596 kcal per serving, this meal provides a high energy intake, particularly valuable during days of prolonged effort. It also contains 57 g of carbohydrates and 36 g of fat.

Preparation is done directly using the self-heating system. After rehydrating the meal with the indicated amount of water, the pouch is placed in the flameless heater. Adding water to the heating compartment triggers a reaction that produces heat. The meal can then be warmed without carrying a stove or fuel.

Compact and lightweight before rehydration, the coconut rice is easy to carry in a backpack or bikepacking bag. Its travel-friendly packaging and long shelf life make it a practical solution for multi-day hikes, bivouacs, or emergency food supplies.

The self-heating explorer's coconut rice is:

  • A hot meal with no stove, no gas and no flame, thanks to the self-heating system
  • 596 kcal per serving, with 57 g of carbohydrates and 36 g of fat for a high energy intake
  • A creamy coconut milk recipe, mild and fragrant, suited to outdoor activities

Warning: the self-heating system generates significant heat during operation. Do not touch the heating agent directly or open the heater during the reaction. Do not use the device on your lap or inside a sleeping bag. Place it on a stable surface and use it in a well-ventilated area, out of reach of children. Allow the heating pouch to cool completely before disposal. The heating system is single-use.

Frequently asked questions

How does it work?

A heating pouch contains an agent that reacts on contact with water. This chemical reaction generates heat and warms your meal — no fire, no gas, no stove.

When is it useful?

In areas where open fires and stoves are prohibited, when travelling by plane where gas canisters are banned, in strong winds or rain, and in emergency or rescue situations.

How long does it take to heat a meal?

About 20 minutes depending on the meal. The reaction starts 20 to 30 seconds after contact with water.

How much water is needed?

Only 20 to 50 ml depending on the model. Too much water causes overflow; too little gives insufficient heating.

Does the water need to be drinking water?

No. Non-drinking or salt water works perfectly well to activate the heater, saving your clean water reserves. However, the water added to your freeze-dried meal must be drinking water.

How do I use it, step by step?

  1. Rehydrate the freeze-dried meal with cold water and seal it well.
  2. Pour the required amount of water into the heater to activate it.
  3. Insert the meal pouch into the heater.
  4. Seal the heater and lay it flat.
  5. Wait 20 minutes without touching or opening the pouch (heats to over 100 °C).
  6. Dispose of the cooled heating pouch in your household bin.

What temperature does it reach?

Between 90 and 100 °C, sometimes higher. Never touch the heating agent directly and do not open the pouch during heating.

Can I use it inside a tent or a van?

Yes, as long as you are in a well-ventilated area. Do not press the heater against delicate fabrics (sleeping bag, down jacket).

What safety precautions should I take?

Always on a stable surface. Never on your lap or inside a sleeping bag, never within reach of children, and do not open the heating pouch during the reaction.

Is the pouch reusable?

No, it is single-use.

How do I dispose of it?

Let it cool completely, then dispose of it in a standard bin. The waste is non-toxic.
