If you are reading this article, it means you are planning to purchase an Osprey backpack. However, you are unsure about the size to order. Choosing the right size is essential for optimal comfort. More than the height of the pack, it also determines the length of the straps and the hip belt.
In this article, we will give you the keys to choosing the Osprey backpack model that suits your body shape. Contrary to what one might think, choosing the size of a backpack is simple and is done in 2 steps. The first is to measure the length of your back. The second is to see which model it corresponds to in the size chart.
1. How to calculate your back size?
This process is common for both men and women. Measuring the length of your back is done in 3 steps.
Step 1: Locate your C7 vertebra. This is the bony bump at the base of your neck at the top of your back. If you can't feel it, tilt your head forward to identify it more easily.
Step 2: Place your hands on top of your hips. You should feel your iliac crests.
Step 3: Measure the length between the C7 vertebra and your iliac crests. Make sure to follow your spine as shown in the image. For this, don't hesitate to get help.

Make sure to check if you are buying a new model or an old model. To find out, simply see what sizes the backpack is available in. If there are 3 sizes available, it is an old model. Models released from 2023 onwards only have two backpack sizes. It is even easier to navigate for a woman. Regarding your body shape, don't worry. Each model is adjustable at the hips and shoulders. We discuss this in more detail in the next section.
4. How to adjust your backpack?
Once you have ordered and received your backpack, it is important to adjust it properly.
- Load your pack with your gear to simulate real conditions.
- Before putting it on your back, loosen all the straps: shoulder straps and hip belt.
- Adjust the length of the back panel.
- Put your pack on your back. If necessary, readjust the length of the back panel.
- Then adjust the hip belt. It should fit snugly around your hips.
- Tighten the shoulder straps enough so that it does not impede your breathing or your shoulders.
- Adjust the load lifter straps located at the top of the pack on your shoulders.
- Clip the chest strap so that the shoulder straps stay straight and do not slip outward.
