Basic survival food supplies

By “basic foods”, we mean “unprocessed foods”. These include bread, dairy products, eggs, meat, vegetables and much more. In other words, foods that make up a complete meal. We talk about survival because these prove to be the ideal solution for outdoor expeditions. In the event of a natural disaster leading to an emergency situation, expedition members can still eat and hydrate without problems.

For a food to meet survival requirements, it needs to be freeze-dried. Logically, a freeze-dried food is one that has undergone freeze-drying.

Freeze-drying is a highly effective food preservation method. It involves pre-freezing foods then dehydrating them to remove all the water they contain. It's considered revolutionary because it's the only food preservation process that allows food to be kept for several decades. Foods are also preserved free from mould. They retain their natural flavours and nutritional values - exactly what an expedition member needs.

It should be noted that food loses its weight and shape when dehydrated. However, there's no need to panic, as once rehydrated (with hot or cold water), the food regains its original shape and smell.

What types of foods can we freeze-dry?

Considering the principle of freeze-drying, we can deduce that the more water a food contains, the more promising its preservation by this process. Water is thus the main factor in ensuring perfect freeze-drying. Consequently, all foods can be freeze-dried, except those that are too sweet, too salty or too fatty. We can mention honey and oil, for example, which contain no water and therefore cannot be freeze-dried.

Foods that frequently undergo this process include fruits (slightly sweet), vegetables, meat, fish, coffee, cheese, etc.

Dairy products

Packaged in sachets and tins, these freeze-dried products are essential foods. We can mention powdered butter, milk and grated parmesan. Their preparation method, as you'll have guessed, is ultra-easy. Simply rehydrate them with hot or cold water and they're ready to eat.

This type of food is very light and easy to handle. Butter powder and milk can be stored for 10 to 15 years. However, grated parmesan can only be stored for 2 years. Nevertheless, you can sprinkle it to perfectly complement your snacks.

Bread and biscuits

These are basic foods, packaged in vacuum-sealed tins, which you can store for 15 years. In this range, you'll find wholemeal bread, rye bread, honey sesame bars, cakes... These foods don't need rehydrating or reheating. They're prepared for direct consumption.
