SSF Evacuation Bags

The French humanitarian NGO Secouristes sans Frontières (SSF) and the Lorient-based company Freeze Dried & Co, specializing in outdoor and survival food, have created an evacuation bag for natural disasters.

During a disaster, between the moment the event occurs and the deployment and care by emergency services, people may feel left to their own devices. Depending on the situation, they may need to administer first aid and sleep outside due to lack of shelter. Without communication, or access to food or, more importantly, potable water, anxiety factors can accumulate in addition to the trauma caused by the disaster. To face these exceptional circumstances, Secouristes sans Frontières and Freeze Dried & Co have developed various evacuation bags.

The equipment included has been carefully selected by Freeze Dried & Co according to SSF's specifications to meet the needs of an individual or family in a crisis. Since 2010, Freeze Dried & Co has advised and supplied numerous NGOs, SDIS, embassies, and delegations, thus acquiring solid expertise in providing suitable products for hard-to-reach areas or crisis situations. The SSF evacuation bags, available on the freezedriedandco.com website, contain different modules packed in water- and dust-proof backpacks. Below is a non-exhaustive list of the equipment that can be found:

- First aid: bandages, compresses, survival blanket, gloves, rescue guides, etc.
- Cooking/food/fire: storm matches, emergency food packs with 3 days of long-lasting food, snacks, wood stove, cup/pot
- Water: 1.5 liters of potable water in pouches, water bottles
- Light: lantern, Petzl headlamps that can be stored for 10 years
- Communication: whistle, multi-purpose FM radio, flashlight, rechargeable battery, etc.
- Shelter: emergency bivouac, emergency blanket
- Hygiene: cleaning wipes
- Personal items: waterproof pouches to protect items like identification papers

Optional equipment is also available to adapt to different situations and increase user comfort. For every evacuation bag sold and equipment recommended by Secouristes Sans Frontières, Freeze Dried & Co will donate 10% to the SSF Endowment Fund to help them build up a stock of equipment and an emergency fund to deploy their teams worldwide.

Since 1978, the humanitarian association has deployed rescuers, doctors, nurses, logisticians, and dog handlers in cases of earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes worldwide. While some disasters are difficult to predict, raising awareness among populations living in risk areas (flood zones, regions prone to high seismic activity, or swept by severe storms) is not in vain to save lives in mainland France and overseas territories. “Two-thirds of France's 36,000 municipalities are exposed to at least one natural risk,” according to the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
