Guide: How to Choose Your Gas Cartridge?

What is a standard gas cartridge made of?

• Isobutane: The gas that heats
  Isobutane is a gas with a high calorific value. It is responsible for providing heat during combustion. In addition to this function, it maintains pressure and performance consistently up to 12°C.
• Propane: The gas that resists the cold
  Propane allows for use in very cold conditions (down to -42°C). It also ensures high pressure.
• Butane: The filling gas
  Butane has good heat-providing characteristics above 0.5°C. Although it freezes below this temperature, it is often used in large quantities because it is inexpensive.

Which gas cartridge brand should you choose?
Regarding our gas cartridges, Optimus, MSR, Primus, and Jetboil are compatible with all screw-thread stoves.

The Optimus gas cartridge is made of Butane/Propane (composition modified in 2016): 70% Butane, 30% Propane. They are cheaper than Jetboil gas cartridges due to their high butane content. However, it remains a balanced mix for optimal stove performance, even in unfavorable weather conditions.

Jetboil gas cartridges (Jetpower) are composed of: 73% Isobutane, 25% Propane, 2% Butane. They can be used in all seasons, even in extreme conditions such as high altitudes or extreme cold. Jetboil has chosen to use very little Butane in favor of Isobutane to maintain stove performance in the coldest conditions.

MSR gas cartridges are composed of: 80% Isobutane, 20% Propane. These cartridges can be used in the same conditions as Jetpower cartridges.

But remember, for optimal use, these cartridges should be paired with an all-in-one stove (stove + pot) that is optimized. For more reliability, we also recommend using gas cartridges from the same brand as your stove.
