Survival Guide [5/8]: Communication Tools in an Emergency Situation
In this fifth chapter of our survival guide, we will discuss how to manage communication in an emergency situation.
When survival is mentioned, we first think of food and rations (such as MREs). While this is indeed essential, there are other aspects to consider. In this article, we will cover the topics of "Communication" and "First Aid."
Communication
Before a disaster strikes, establish a meeting plan, memorize the locations of your homes, workplaces, and phone numbers, and designate an out-of-region contact through whom your family can send messages. For signaling, learn to use a mirror, choose a visual distress signal, or signal with smoke: simple communication methods in a crisis.
It’s also necessary to have the equipment to communicate: a mobile phone, a landline, and a manual charger; a radio with emergency and weather stations; a whistle and a signaling mirror. Additionally, make sure you know the emergency numbers in France. These numbers allow you to contact emergency services 24/7 and are as follows:
- 112: European emergency number, if you are a victim or witness to an accident in an EU country
- 15: SAMU, to request medical intervention in a vital distress situation and to be redirected to a healthcare provider
- 17: Police Secours, to report an offense requiring immediate police intervention
- 18: Firefighters, to report a situation or accident involving people or property and request their swift intervention
- 114: Emergency number for the deaf and hard of hearing, if you are a victim or witness to an emergency situation requiring the intervention of rescue services. Available via fax and SMS
- 196: Sea Rescue, if you witness an abnormal or emergency situation at sea
