Real Field Meal rations contain freeze-dried breakfasts or freeze dried food; each Norwegian ration provides around 1,300 kcal. These rations are used by the Norwegian, Swedish and Swiss armed forces, among others.

Rations used by armed forces

These rations play an important role in troop morale. They are designed to be compact, light and tasty, giving soldiers a welcome boost. They are often pre-packed or tinned meals that are easy to prepare and eat, with options such as freeze dried food. They can vary between armed forces.

How combat rations have evolved

Rations have changed considerably over time. Take a look at American rations to discover what soldiers have eaten over the decades.

Like any army, the US Army has military rations to feed soldiers at the front. Its individual rations have changed through successive conflicts, from the American Civil War and the two World Wars to the present day. Here is a look at their history.

Military rations during the American Civil War

The US Army ration in use during the American Civil War was established by the Continental Congress. It was a garrison ration consisting of salted fish or meat, vegetables, hardtack or bread. It also included a spirits ration, whose contents changed over the years.

Military rations during the First World War

The US Army used three types of combat ration during the First World War: the Iron Ration, the Trench Ration and the Reserve Ration.

- The Iron Ration: these individual rations came in a sealed tin and contained 3 ounces (85 g) of biscuits, pepper, packets of salt and three 1-ounce (28 g) bars of sweetened chocolate. The US Army fed its troops this combat ration from 1907 to 1922.
- The Trench Ration was replaced by the Iron Ration. It was developed to solve a specific problem: getting daily rations to soldiers fighting on the front line. These individual rations contained a variety of tinned fish and meat. They were heavy and bulky, but resisted contamination from gas attacks. The ration was later discontinued in favour of the Reserve Ration.
- The Reserve Ration was used from 1917 to 1937. Created during the latter part of the First World War, it originally contained a pound (454 g) of meat or 12 ounces (340 g) of fresh bacon, along with hardtack, two 8-ounce (227 g) tins of bread, a 2.4-ounce (68 g) packet of granulated sugar, 1.16 ounces (33 g) of ground coffee and 0.16 ounces (5 g) of salt.

Military rations during the Second World War

During the Second World War, the rations the US Army had used in the First World War underwent numerous revisions. These led to new rations.

- Ration A is a garrison ration prepared in a kitchen. It contains meat and locally sourced produce.
- Ration B is a field ration prepared in a kitchen. Unlike Ration A, it contains no fresh produce.
- Ration C consists of individual rations containing food that does not need kitchen preparation and tinned goods.
- Ration K is also an individual ration. It is a combat ration containing mainly corned beef and the bare essentials.
- Ration D is an emergency ration containing energy-rich foods, including chocolate bars.

In addition to the rations mentioned above, the US Army used other rations for specific purposes to feed its troops. The army has since discontinued them.

- Type X ration;
- 5-in-1 ration
- 10-in-1 ration
- Mountain Ration providing 4,800 calories, discontinued in 1943
- Jungle Ration providing 4,000 calories, discontinued in 1943
- Assault Lunch providing between 500 and 2,000 calories
- Assault Ration, etc.

Of all these rations, only A and B rations and First Strike Rations remain in military use today. FSRs (First Strike Rations) provide soldiers with 2,900 kcal per day. They are effective and cover three meals a day.

These rations cannot be resold. We offer MRE rations similar to those used by the US military.

Compared with rations from other countries, French Army rations have an excellent reputation and are often described as the best. These rations are still in use but, unfortunately, cannot be sold. The military rations we make are similar to the French ration.

Finally, Arctic Field Meal rations are eaten by the Swiss and Norwegian armed forces.

Military rations today

Individual rations evolved and gave way to others, including:

- Survival rations;
- Survival food module;
- Individual freeze-dried commando ration;
- Supplementary or emergency food unit;
- Individual training meal.

There is also a heatable individual combat ration. This is a standard ration intended for a soldier’s daily consumption. Shelf life varies, but these combat rations keep for two years on average. They provide around 3,000 kcal.

When might you use these military rations?

Military rations are useful in a range of situations. Their long shelf life makes them popular for home emergency supplies, ready for a power cut, flood or shortage. Airsoft players also appreciate army rations: they offer a quick meal during a game and add to the experience of playing a soldier. Others buy them simply out of curiosity, to taste what soldiers eat.

What is a military ration?

A military ration, also called a combat ration or army ration, is a complete pre-packed meal designed to feed a soldier in the field without external supplies. It keeps for several years and provides enough calories for a full day of physical activity. Most include a heating element for a hot meal in the field.

Where did the K-ration come from?

The K-ration mentioned earlier on this page was an individual combat ration used by the US Army during the Second World War. It consisted mainly of corned beef and the bare essentials for a soldier alone in the field. It was part of a series of rations (A, B, C, K, D) created for different purposes, from feeding troops in garrison to providing emergency energy.
