Cookpots

When cooking in the forest or mountains without the extra weight, there are several types of cookware to choose from: the cookpot, the saucepan, the frying pan, and the kettle. Each one meets different needs.

Our catalogue has everything you need for your activities. Let us help you find the best option for your situation.

The cookpot: a trekking essential

The cookpot sits somewhere between a mug and a saucepan. It generally offers a larger capacity than a mug, ranging from 0.5 to 1 litre. The cookpot is an accessory designed exclusively for camping, bivouacking, and expeditions. It is lightweight, compact, and can be placed on a wood fire or a gas stove.

Hiking cookpots are available in several materials. The first is stainless steel. It is a durable, lightweight material with no health risks. It is also long-lasting and will accompany you on countless outdoor adventures.

Next is aluminium. Even lighter than stainless steel, aluminium cookpots are ideal for those seeking ultra-light gear. Be aware that aluminium can be harmful if ingested. Always choose quality equipment. All aluminium cookpots sold on Freezedriedandco.com are completely safe!

The premium material for cookpots is titanium. It is the lightest of all. Titanium cookpots are barely noticeable in your pack. They are also robust and long-lasting. Slightly more expensive than aluminium or stainless steel options, they remain a sound long-term investment. High-altitude trekkers love them, particularly the Toaks cookpots.

Finally, there are silicone cookpots. This material has the advantage of being foldable. A silicone cookpot takes up very little space in your pack since, once folded, it becomes completely flat. It is slightly heavier than other materials, but still very light overall. The downside is that these cookpots are less versatile than others. Foldable silicone cookpots can only be used on a gas stove and must have a stainless steel base. Silicone is sensitive to heat, so using them over a wood fire is strongly discouraged.

Freezedried & Co offers a wide choice of cookpots below. There is something for every budget, material, and capacity. If you want to filter for cookpots only, use the filters.

The hiking saucepan: ideal for cooking

While the cookpot is most useful for heating water for freeze dried food or pasta, it quickly shows its limits when it comes to more refined cooking. A saucepan is the better choice in that case. Unlike the cookpot, the saucepan is wider, allowing for better food distribution and more even cooking.

The camping saucepan also offers a larger capacity, ranging from 0.8 litres up to 4 or even 5 litres. Larger capacities are ideal for groups. If you regularly hike with friends or family, a saucepan lets you cook hearty shared meals around a campfire.

As for materials, stainless steel is the most widely used. It is the most robust and best suited to handling heavier loads, which is why titanium saucepans are not available in larger capacities.

Titanium cookpots rarely exceed 1.2 litres, though models from 0.7 litres do exist. You can cook great meals without weighing down your pack. For example, the Toaks titanium cookpot available on Freezedriedandco.com has a 700 ml capacity and weighs just 90 g! It is ideal for a solo trekker or expedition hiker.

The bivouac pan: equip yourself with quality gear

Although less common, there are pans designed for bivouacs and expeditions. They are rarely seen on long-distance trails or short hikes, where they are considered an unnecessary luxury. However, for long expeditions, a pan is an essential piece of kit for cooking foods such as meat or eggs.

The pan is also popular with van and motorhome travellers. It is equally well suited to bivouac meals enjoyed at sunset.

Current models are almost all made from stainless steel for the qualities described above. It is more durable yet remains lightweight. Some models made from food-grade anodised aluminium are also available. Most models feature a non-stick coating to prevent food from sticking. That said, using a little oil is still recommended.

To preserve the non-stick properties of the pan, avoid using abrasive objects such as a knife or even a stainless steel fork. You can, however, use bioplastic sporks or wooden cutlery. For cleaning, use the soft yellow side of a sponge rather than the abrasive green side. A microfibre cloth can also do the job.

Stainless steel pans for hiking and camping work on all types of stove (wood, alcohol, gas, etc.). They can also be used over a campfire.
