8-Chapter Survival Guide: How to Prepare for a Crisis
The French Government advises preparing for survival scenarios related to major risks. These risks are categorized into five types:
- Natural Risks (avalanche, heatwave, cyclone, volcanic eruption, wildfires, extreme cold, flooding, earthquake, storm...)
- Technological Risks
- Cyber Risks
- Health & Epidemic Risks
- Terrorist Risks
Why Prepare?
Preparing for a disaster will bring you peace of mind, enhance your comfort, and eliminate your reliance on external aid. There are three key steps to getting prepared:
- Survival: Staying alive is the top priority in an emergency. The focus is on having food, water, and the essential equipment needed to survive until help arrives.
- Independence: Once your survival needs are addressed, the next step is to gather the tools and resources necessary to become self-sufficient and not rely on the outside world.
- Comfort: After preparing for survival, think about acquiring goods and skills that will allow you not just to survive but to thrive independently during a crisis
How to Prepare?
The basics of preparation are the same for every scenario. You will need these 10 modules in almost every situation. We’ve written a detailed article for each one. Here they are:
- [1/8] Water
- [2/8] Food
- [3/8] Cold
- [4/8] First Aid
- [5/8] Communication
- [6/8] Transportation
- [7/8] Electricity
- [8/8] Important Documents
You can use these 8 modules as a minimum level of preparedness. Then, build a 72-hour emergency kit covering these essentials
The Different Levels of Crisis
Crises can vary in severity and impact, ranging from individual disruptions to large-scale disasters. On a personal level, a crisis might involve job loss, a severe illness, or an accident. These situations require preparation to ensure the continuity of daily life and safety.
On a broader scale, natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and wildfires can affect entire communities. Technological risks like massive power outages or cyberattacks can paralyze critical infrastructure. Health crises, such as pandemics, can have global consequences. At the top of the scale, extreme events like civil wars or nuclear conflicts represent existential threats that demand maximum preparedness and resilience.
Preparing for these various scenarios helps mitigate risks and safeguard lives during a crisis.
