Description
The ProLite™ Apex is a self-inflating mattress designed by Therm-A-Rest. Like all mattresses from the American brand, this one is no exception to the rule in being compact and light. It is slightly larger than a Nalgene water bottle (approximately 33 cm long for the Regular model) when folded. Its weight is 620 g for the Regular, 790 g for the Regular Wide and 850 g for the Large. The fact that it is self-inflating will save you a lot of energy when it comes to inflating and deflating it. This is always appreciated after a day of exerting yourself.
The Therm-A-Rest ProLite Apex Mattress has an R-Value of 3.8. This indicator is used to assess the thermal insulation performance of mattresses. This standard is standardised and was created by the Outdoor Industry Association. With an R-Value of 3.8, this mattress is perfect for 3-season use. Equipped with the WingLock™ valve, the Therm-A-Rest ProLite Apex Self-Inflating Mattress is as easy to inflate as it is to deflate. This very robust valve is resistant to shocks and extreme temperatures. But in case of damage (it can still happen), it is possible to repair or change it. This avoids having to buy a new hiking mattress.
To inflate the mattress, just open the valve and blow. Unlike traditional inflatable mattresses, the ProLite Apex will inflate 3 times faster. Hence its description as a 'self-inflating mattress' The non-return valve prevents it from deflating at high speed, even if it remains open. It must, however, be closed to avoid any loss. Conversely, if you've inflated your mattress too much, simply open the valve. The little air that will escape will help make it more cosy.
Speaking of deflation, open the WingLock valve then roll up your ProLite Apex mattress. The air will escape and the mattress will compress back to its original size. A speed appreciated which allows not to waste energy before leaving the camp for a new day of hiking.
