Survival: tips on how to stay healthy in a crisis situation

Clothing

Consider clothing and fabric, choose textiles that dry quickly or woollen clothes for warmth and moisture wicking, and dress in easy-to-remove layers for more comfort. Every season, it is recommended to check your survival kit (check and update your children kits more often because they grow so fast).

Fire and Shelter

Matches and Fire starters are essential items to make a fire and create heat. And there is nothing better than warming up with a hot water bottle or using a fan in extreme heat. Shelter is also crucial. First plan for survival, then for durability and comfort.

For sleeping, consider having an emergency sleeping bag, that is all you will need. But if you add mattress and pillow, you will be able to increase your comfort even more. Make sure you have a survival blanket, it is cheap and easy to store.

Hygiene

To remain healthy when disaster strikes, make sure you have all necessary hygiene supplies so that you and your family stay clean. Hand sanitizer, water and a flask of liquid bleach are a good start. Learn the methods to keep your utensils, food, water and hands clean, away from bacteria : you should use boiled and soap to wash your hands and sanitize utensils because these are necessary hygiene practices in disasters.

Laundry, keeping clothes clean is an important factor to secure good health. In emergencies, helpers are in contact with sick people and exposed to contaminated environments. A bucket of water and laundry tablets allow for a quick and easy washing.

When a disaster hits, maintaining personal hygiene helps boost morale and prevents infections and diseases. First priority, sanitation involves the safe disposal of human waste. Consider implementing 2 private spaces, one for toilets and the second one for emergency toilets. Little money is spent to provide great benefits, that is, you keep your environment clean and fit to live, while still having a private space, and a chance to refresh yourself.
