Katadyn water treatment solutions

Filtres à eau Katadyn Water filters feature different filtration systems to ensure you have access to potable water in all circumstances, whether you are car camping, hiking or even at a camp base. There are 3 systems available : ceramic, activated carbon and fiberglass; find out what their characteristics are :

Ceramic : Ceramic filters have a micro-porous layer impregnated with silver particles, which prevent bacteria growth. With ceramic filters, pore size is essential. That’s where Katadyn ceramic differs from the competition : each pore is 0.2 microns (0.0002 mm). Bacteria are between 0.3 and 1.5 microns in size while protozoa are between 1 and 100 microns, so you are sure you’re getting perfect filtration. Moreover, ceramic filters can be mechanically regenerated and the filter capacity is measurable. In case of viral pollution, we recommend to complete the filtration action with Micropur Forte.

Activated carbon : Activated carbon filters are used to retain dangerous inert organic substances found in the water. They also help to eliminate bad odors and bad taste if any. They remove pesticides (lindane-DDT), trihalomethanes (THMs), nitrates trc.? from water. Activated carbon particles attract and hold such substances. Granulated activated carbon cannot regenerate.

Glassfiber : Some filters are made of two separate layers of glass fiber in a very thin format. The pore size is 0.3 microns. Bacteria and protozoa are trapped mechanically. Fiberglass flexibility and filter construction (in layers) help increase both surface filtration and dirt-retention capacity.

There is another method of treating water without using any filters. It’s through the use of Micropur tablets. Based on the properties of some chemicals, silver, chlorine or iodine, these tablets will treat your water and/or will conserve your water clear for a long time.

Silver : Silver ions are attracted to bacteria by polar absorption. After penetrating the cell membrane, the ions damage the bacteria’s DNA, thus preventing further multiplication. They attack until blocking the bacteria’s breathing system causing a chain reaction leading to the bacteria’s death. Micropur uses silver ions to conserve drinking water for a certain period, up to 6 months. Micropur Forte also uses Chlorine for water disinfection.

Chlorine : Chlorine is the most commonly used disinfectant for water treatment in the world. It is rapidly effective and has a wide range of uses. However, it is not suitable for conservation, it must be applied in the correct dosage, and its storage may be an issue in some cases.

Iodine : Like chlorine, iodine is a member of the halogen family and its use is identical. It’s easier to store and less pH dependent. But it has a major disadvantage of leaving an unpleasant taste. To eliminate that point at issue, Katadyn combines iodine water treatment with an activated carbon filter.
