A pioneering climbing company
The real story begins a few years ago. In 1957, climber Yvon Chouinard was only 19 years old when he started manufacturing climbing pitons. He felt that the ones on the market were not strong enough. At the same time, he built steel carabiners in a small workshop in his parents' backyard. He then sold his accessories from the boot of his van. That's how Chouinard Equipment Ltd. was born.
Chouinard, who also founded the famous Patagonia brand in 1973, played a major role in the birth of modern climbing. The old equipment was damaging the rock, so the young company started designing clean climbing equipment. This style of climbing leaves the wall untouched after the climb and does not damage the rock. The company quickly grew to become the leading supplier of climbing equipment.
The birth of Black Diamond
Unfortunately, Chouinard Equipment Ltd went bankrupt in the late 1980s. It was bought out by employees and customers of the brand. In 1989, the company was renamed Black Diamond Equipment. The brand moved its offices from Ventura (California) to Salt Lake City (Utah) in order to be closer to the mountains and its many activities: climbing but also skiing, trail-running, trekking, mountaineering...
Black Diamond has continued to grow while maintaining its focus on being a pioneer in its field while maintaining an ethical commitment. Climbing is still its core business but the company has greatly expanded its range of hiking equipment with headlamps, hiking poles, backpacks and even tents.
Today, Black Diamond Equipment has an international presence (notably in Europe since 1996) and continues to support numerous organisations such as Leave No Trace, The Nature Conservancy and the Outdoor Industry Foundation.
