Guide: how to store your water?

When disaster strikes, you need water not only to hydrate your body but also to take care of your personal hygiene. Water is also essential for cooking (especially freeze-dried meals that need rehydration or for pasta cooking), laundry, sanitation and first aid.
On average French people consume 150 L of water per day per person. The more potable water you have in an emergency situation the better.

How much emergency water should you store ?

In emergencies, you don’t need to store so much water, keeping 10 L of water per day per person should suffice for hydration, some hygiene, food and to hand-wash a few clothes.

Besides potable water, make sure to store water filters and water treatment solutions, of the Micropur type to make water safe and to conserve it.

Emergency water storage tips

  • You can keep portable water containers ; at home, large drums are ideal, but in the event of an evacuation, you’ll have to take about 20 L of water with you, so use jerrycans for that
  • Color codes, dark blue containers help to keep water from light and limit any algae growth. Red containers are usually used for gasoline.
  • Only use clean containers and avoid using bottles or glass jars. Bottles are biodegradable and glass easily breaks.
  • For long-term storage, start out with clean water, you’ll have less water treatment to do
  • Treat water when you use it and not when you store it
  • Store water away from sunlight
  • Keep water containers on pallet to avoid contact with chemicals on the ground
  • • Rotate water every year
