Survival: how to be prepared for a crisis situation?

The French Government calls for citizens to be prepared for, respond to and recover from major disasters and emergencies. Major risks, classified into 5 different main types, are as follows :

  • Natural disasters (Avalanche, Extreme heat, Hurricanes, Volcanoes, Fires, Extreme cold, Floods, Earthquakes, Storms ...)
  • Technological risks
  • Cyber risks
  • Health hazards
  • Terrorism

Why prepare ?

Being prepared for a disaster can calm your anxiety, increase your comfort level and can even reduce your dependency on external assistance. There are 3 steps to emergency preparedness :

To survive means to remain alive ; staying alive must be your number one priority in any emergency situation. Essential items are food and water; you should also have the equipment necessary to stay alive until rescue arrives.
Independence means that once you are prepared for and have developed an emergency plan for your survival, you must find the equipment necessary to reduce your dependency on the outside world.
Comfort means that once you have your emergency plan ready, you need to think about the goods and skills that will allow you not only to survive but also to do well on your own during a crisis situation.
